TEMPLE UNIVERSITY
LIACOURAS WALK

Size75,000 SF
LocationPhiladelphia, PA
OwnerTemple University

This five story building for Temple University houses the offices of student services, a ballroom, and the University President’s residence. The south and east elevations incorporate the facades of historic row homes that were located on Liacouras Walk South. The site is in the center of Temple University’s Main Campus which is a part of a City of Philadelphia Historic District. The project involved the demolition of 10 row homes, the restoration of the 130-year old brick façades, and the construction of a new, five-story office building. The façades were temporarily supported during construction by steel A frames, which were removed when restoration was complete. The brickwork was extremely brittle and great care was needed during the installation of the temporary supports and during the removal of the remaining structures to avoid any potential for collapse, given its location close to two highly trafficked pedestrian walks. The restored brick façades, including the original cornice and the mansard roof structures, are now a permanent part of the exterior wall of the new office building.
