Little Sisters of the Poor has been serving elderly residents of Philadelphia for more than a century. Their Holy Family Home campus, located in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia, is a retirement home and convent that provides two types of living arrangements for low-income seniors: Skilled Nursing and Independent Living. The 4.85-acre campus includes a chapel and existing structures. This project will add a new two-story healthcare center/convent with connections to adjacent buildings. By adding a new facility, renovating parts of the existing buildings, and demolishing the rest, the Sisters hope to meet the needs of an aging population.
Phase 1
The first phase of the project is the construction of a new healthcare center/convent. The building has a steel and cold-formed metal frame structure with a brick and EIFS façade, for which site work began in the summer of 2022 and is scheduled for completion in August 2023. The campus, including the existing adjacent buildings, is fully occupied during construction. At project completion, the Sisters will occupy the convent portion of the new building and nursing care residents will occupy units in the healthcare center.
Phase 2
The second phase includes significant demolition of the existing 5-story building with substantial interior and exterior renovations. The stripped building will get a new exterior façade, roof, MEP systems, a commercial kitchen, and a new building entrance. Extensive site work will include an upgraded parking lot, a new rain garden, a security gate, and landscaping throughout. Chapel renovations will also be included during this phase of construction.
Phase 3
The third phase of the project will include the complete demolition of all remaining existing facilities and the addition of new parking garage. Additional site work will include an outdoor gathering space and extra parking areas.
